Connecting the Knowledge to Practice
Through HLTH 634 and my time at Liberty, I have grown personally and professionally by exploring public health topics and strengthening my understanding of how the MPH core areas support effective leadership, communication, and engagement.
The greatest lesson from integrating these competencies is that no single discipline can address public health challenges alone.
Understanding Community Health Needs
When developing a public health proposal, epidemiological research can identify populations disproportionately affected by a health concern and demonstrate the need for targeted interventions. By examining risk-factor patterns and other epidemiological evidence, public health professionals can make informed decisions and prioritize community health needs.
Understanding Health Behaviors
Developing an effective program requires an understanding of the audience’s beliefs, health literacy, and potential barriers to behavior change. Applying behavioral theories can then help shape messages that are relevant, easy to understand, and more likely to encourage positive health behaviors.
Promoting Change
An advocacy project demonstrates how public health professionals engage decision-makers and promote policies or programs that address community health priorities. Building on these advocacy efforts, policy knowledge enables public health leaders to move beyond individual-level education and champion broader structural improvements.
Building through Leadership and Collaboration
Effective planning for a public health intervention starts with clearly defining roles and responsibilities, identifying key community partners, and setting priorities that reflect population needs. Equally important is incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives to ensure the intervention is inclusive and responsive to community concerns. By applying strong leadership principles throughout this process, public health professionals can develop organized, equitable, and sustainable initiatives that promote meaningful and lasting health improvements.
Turning Knowledge into Action
Developing communication materials, such as brochures, news releases, marketing plans, and public service announcements (PSAs), provides valuable opportunities to translate evidence-based information into clear, accessible, and engaging messages tailored to diverse audiences. Through these efforts, strategic communication plays an essential role in improving health literacy, strengthening community engagement, and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
